Burnout Isn’t Always About Work
By Nicole Lynn
When we hear the word burnout, many of us think about long hours, job stress, or feeling overwhelmed at work. While work can certainly play a role, burnout doesn’t always come from what we do for a living. Sometimes, it comes from everything else.
Burnout can build when you’ve been carrying a lot for a long time, always being the dependable one, the helper, the person who keeps things moving even when you’re tired or stretched thin. It’s what happens when you keep pushing through without much space to pause, check in, or take care of yourself.
It doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. You might feel constantly tired, more irritable than usual, emotionally numb, or disconnected from things that once mattered. Maybe you’re managing just fine on the outside, but inside you feel drained or worn down. Burnout isn’t a failure or a sign that you’re not coping well enough. It’s often your mind and body responding to ongoing stress and responsibility without enough support.
Therapy can be a place to slow things down and make sense of it all, not to fix you, but to give you space to talk things through, reconnect with what you need, and feel less alone in what you’re carrying. You don’t have to wait until things fall apart to reach out. Sometimes burnout is simply a sign that it’s time for a little care and support.
