Addictions and Alcohol Counselling
Alcohol Counselling
5 Ways to Prepare to Reduce or Stop Alcohol
Step 1: Take the Alcohol Change Readiness Test
Purpose:
Before making any changes, it helps to notice where you are right now. This test is reflective, not judgmental-there are no right or wrong answers.
Instructions:
Read each statement and choose the number that best fits how you feel today:
0 = Not at all true | 1 = Slightly true | 2 = Somewhat true | 3 = Mostly true | 4 = Very true
Awareness
- I notice how alcohol affects my body, mood, and daily functioning.
- I am aware of patterns around when and why I drink.
Motivation
3. Part of me wants to cut back or stop drinking.
4. I can imagine a version of myself with healthier drinking habits.
Emotional Readiness
5. I am willing to experience uncomfortable emotions without using alcohol.
6. I recognize alcohol has been a coping tool, not a personal failure.
Confidence & Support
7. I believe positive change is possible, even if it takes time.
8. I feel open to receiving support (therapy, groups, or online resources).
Commitment to Exploration
9. I am curious about my relationship with alcohol.
10. I am willing to explore small steps toward change rather than forcing big changes.
Scoring Interpretation:
- 0-10: Building awareness – focus on understanding patterns, no pressure to change yet
- 11-20: Gently considering change – reflection and curiosity are key
- 21-30: Preparing for change – start small steps and plan support
- 31-40: Ready to take steps – begin structured change work and support
Step 1 Action:
If your score indicates you are ready to take steps, consider making an appointment for an EMDR Hypnotherapy session today to start addressing triggers and cravings safely.
Step 2: Create a Personalized Reduction or Quit Plan
If your readiness score indicates you are preparing for change, begin by creating a plan that fits your life and pace:
- Take our online EMDR Hypnotherapy course to understand triggers, cravings, and nervous system responses.
- Re-take the readiness test after the course to notice progress and readiness for further steps.
Step 3: Explore Change Gently
· If your readiness score suggests you are gently considering change, you may benefit from downloading our Road to Recovery Workbook. This workbook is designed to help you explore the question:
· “Which part of me wants change, and which part is still protecting me through smoking?”
· You are welcome to work through the workbook at your own pace, or you may choose to connect with one of our trained interns to move through the material together with added support and guidance.
Reassess readiness periodically with the Alcohol Change Readiness Test-readiness can change over time, and that’s okay!
Both parts deserve understanding. Change happens when protection is honored, not forced.
Step 4: Work Through Relational Regulation Therapy (RRT)
If your score indicates you are gently considering change:
- Download or access our RRT Workbook for alcohol.
- Reflect on questions such as:
- Engage with RRT exercises to explore emotional and relational patterns influencing alcohol use.
You can work independently or with support from a trained intern, especially if past attempts at change felt blocked.
Reassess readiness periodically with the Alcohol Change Readiness Test-readiness can change over time, and that’s okay!
Step 5: Connect with EMDR Hypnotherapy Recordings
For ongoing support and maintenance:
- Use our EMDR Hypnotherapy recordings designed specifically for alcohol cravings, triggers, and emotional regulation.
- Practice consistently to strengthen new coping patterns and reduce the impact of high-risk situations.
Our HOME KIT allows you to connect with your own ongoing therapy sessions daily!
