Suicide Intervention

Suicidal pain can affect individuals, families, and entire therapeutic systems. Effective suicide intervention requires more than completing a risk assessment-it requires clinical clarity, compassionate engagement, relational safety, and a thoughtful response to the person behind the crisis.

At The Counselling House, our approach to suicide intervention is grounded in trauma-informed, relational, and evidence-informed practice. We provide clinical support, assessment, intervention, and professional training designed to help individuals and clinicians respond to suicidal distress with compassion, structure, and confidence.

Our suicide intervention resources include the SAFE-R Protocol for mental health professionals and Returning to Life-Sustaining Relationship, a client-centered workbook designed to support individuals experiencing suicidal pain, disconnection, and loss of meaning.

Returning to Life-Sustaining Relationship

A Relational Regulation Therapy Workbook for Clients Living with Suicidal Pain, Disconnection, and the Search for Meaning

Sometimes a person does not need another list of things they are supposed to do.

Sometimes they need a place to begin understanding why staying has become so difficult.

Returning to Life-Sustaining Relationship is a gentle, relationship-centered workbook created for individuals experiencing suicidal pain, hopelessness, emotional overwhelm, disconnection, or a loss of meaning.

Grounded in Relational Regulation Therapy (RRT), the workbook takes a different approach to suicide recovery. Rather than focusing primarily on completing tasks or changing thoughts, it explores the relationship between pain, nervous-system regulation, connection, meaning, and the desire to stay.

The workbook gently guides readers through:

  • Understanding suicidal pain without judgment
  • Recognizing what happens in the body during distress
  • Learning about the Window of Safety
  • Understanding disconnection and relational wounds
  • Exploring attachment and relationship patterns
  • Developing regulation and grounding strategies
  • Learning the importance of co-regulation
  • Identifying safe and supportive relationships
  • Exploring values, meaning, and what still matters
  • Discovering small reasons for staying
  • Building life-sustaining relationships
  • Creating a personalized Staying Plan
  • Preparing supportive tools for difficult moments

More than a workbook-it is an invitation back into relationship.

The central message is simple:

You do not have to solve your entire life in order to stay for another moment.

Sometimes staying begins with a person.

Sometimes it begins with a memory, a pet, a place, a value, a relationship, a future possibility, or simply the recognition that the story is not finished.

The workbook can be used independently by adults, alongside a therapist, or relationally with a parent or caregiver supporting a young person, depending on the individual’s circumstances and clinical needs.

For parents and caregivers, the workbook provides opportunities to move away from trying to fix suicidal pain and toward becoming a safe, steady, regulating presence.

Who is it for?

Returning to Life-Sustaining Relationship may be appropriate as a therapeutic resource for:

  • Individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional crisis
  • Clients recovering from a suicidal crisis
  • People experiencing profound disconnection or hopelessness
  • Trauma survivors
  • Individuals struggling with meaning or purpose
  • Teens and young adults when used with appropriate adult/clinical support
  • Parents and caregivers supporting a child or young person

The Hypnosis ComponentThe accompanying hypnosis recordings are designed to provide an additional experiential pathway into regulation, safety, connection, and hope.

Rather than asking the listener to simply think differently, the recordings use gentle therapeutic language and guided relaxation to help create opportunities for:

  • Settling an overwhelmed nervous system
  • Developing a felt sense of safety
  • Returning attention to the body
  • Experiencing calm and grounding
  • Connecting with supportive relationships
  • Reconnecting with personal meaning and values
  • Strengthening compassionate self-relationship
  • Remembering reasons for staying
  • Creating a sense of inner steadiness during difficult moments
  • Reconnecting with the possibility that pain can change

The recordings are intended to be listened to repeatedly and at the individual’s own pace, allowing the ideas explored in the workbook to become more experiential and personally meaningful.
